time to provalue our money? - 6 new
-----------------------------------
I have looked up the word provalue in several eminent dictionaries, and can
find no trace of that word. Perhaps we should inform the Oxford English
Dictionary. I would be obliged if someone could explain exactly what it means
and from what roots it is derived. Is it common US-speak? The nearest I can
get is 'revalue' - Wed, Jul 8 2009 11:54 pm

About to lose news group access, looking for info - 1 new

...When you respond to newsgroup trolls, you aren't "fighting the good fight"
you are encouraging them to continue baiting you with post after post after
post. You're not defending anything, you're not standing up for yourself,
you're not changing anyone's mind. It is a futile struggle with people who
don't actually care at all about numismatics nor do they quite - Thurs, Jul 9

Medals and Coins and Stamps, Oh My! - 6 new
-------------------------------------------
In the grand scheme of things, production of medals is a minor Mint activity
and is dictated by Congress. But the Mint always seems to be overextended in
its obligations and activities, so it makes no sense that they consume Mint
resources issuing medals for the likes of former Secretaries of the Treasury
and a PGA golfer. (Those are current offerings, others of equally baffling
logic can be found in past and future listings.) A medal presumably requires
almost as much design work and pre-production as a coin. Then there is the
actual coining (medaling?) and distribution. Even with the enormous mark-up on
materials for the $38 versions, most of these "ego candy" medals must be a net
loss for the Mint. After they sell them to friends, family, suck-ups, and
however many compulsive collectors there are who have to have one of
everything, who buys these things? Who the hell would want them? - Thurs, Jul

Help with an old coin ID - 4 new
--------------------------------
I've had this coin since I was a kid. My grandfather gave it to me, I think.
I've scoured the internet many times trying to figure out what it is but have
never had any luck. A friend of mine told me about the group and said that
maybe someone could help. It seems to be gold or bronze and I can't make out
any of the script on it. It has a shield - Thurs, Jul 9 2009 1:21 pm
